Introducing Mr. Joel

Updated: Jul 30, 2019

Hello, I am Mr Joel. Prior to teaching, I attended Presbyterian High School and SP before graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NUS.

As I enjoy Math and Science, I choose to specialise in Primary (Mathematics, Science and English) and Secondary (Maths).

Before becoming a full-time tutor, I was teaching in a primary school, CHIJ OLN for five years. I have taught a mixture of higher, middle and lower progress pupils across different levels and subjects.

Why teaching?

I enjoy teaching as it allows me to impart both knowledge and values to the next generation.

How would you describe yourself in two or three words?

I would say that I am patient and approachable. My pupils find my lessons interesting and enjoyable.

Here are a few of their testimonials:

As an educator, I aim to inculcate a growth mind-set in every child during my lessons. I believe that he is able to improve as long as he puts in the time and effort to learn. Through my lessons, I hope to help your child develop an awareness of his strengths and weaknesses in his learning- especially in the way he approaches questions. Being aware of the above will help motivate him to take charge of his learning as long as he remains humble and open to feedback.

It is my belief that parents play an irreplaceable role in the success of their children. I look forward to work with you to help your child make the right choices in learning and in life.

Advice to students

For those of you still studying, success is influenced by our choices in life and the friends we make. When you feel like giving up, try and try again. Learn to make the right choices and choose the right friends-friends who will stick with you through thick and thin. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Additional Information

Examples of testimonials from my ex-pupils:

Thank you for being so kind to me by helping me when I don’t know how to write stuff or phrase them. (Dawn Koh, P3,2016)

Thank you for always teaching very interesting lessons all the time. (Janise, P3, 2016)

I enjoy attending your lessons because Your teaching methods are very creative and your Science experiments are very interesting. (Jolene Hong, P3, 2014)

Thank you for teaching me Science. Now I have lots of experiments and ideas coming from my head. Thank you for being my teacher. (Peiyun, P3, 2014)

You are a funny teacher and at the same time can be firm! Thank you Mr Lam for your encouragement and concern. (Umie Amira, P3, 2014)

You are my guiding star because you love me as I am and teach me to love others in the same way. (Joanie, P4, 2017)

Thank you for being nice to the class. You are a really patient teacher. Please, never, ever stop teaching. (Maisarah, P3, 2014)

During my secondary school days, I was involved in the Boys’ Brigade, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Besides my appointment as a squad leader, I also represented the B.B. as part of the marching contingent in National Day Parade. Being in a uniformed group helped me to become more disciplined, humble and a better team-player. Apart from B.B., I was the chairman of a chess club during my secondary school days. I also served as a management committee member of my cca during my time in SP.

Apart from teaching, I was involved as a volunteer therapy facilitator in a Learning and Counselling clinic. My role involved assisting clinical therapists to help children develop their cognitive and physiological learning intelligence and mentoring children and youth to help them socially and emotionally. I believe that knowing about the different aspects of learning helps me tailor my teaching approach to my students and relate to them better.

I believe that every child can learn and deserves to learn. A teacher is not just someone who delivers content knowledge to students. He or she strives to be a good role-model to students and works hand-in-hand with parents to help students develop the right skills and values to make the right choices in life.

As an educator, I aim to inculcate a growth mind-set in every child during my lessons- that he is able to improve as long as he puts in the time and effort to learn. Through my lessons, I hope to help your child develop an awareness of his strengths and weaknesses in his learning- especially in the way he approaches questions. Being aware of the above will help motivate him to take charge of his learning as long as he remains humble and open to feedback.
